On a very rainy day, the Scribes showed up in matching uniforms!

Ruie began the morning by sharing British lexicon, for example--
  • “digestive” = ”cookie”
  • “fairy cake” = “cupcake:
  • “kippers” = ”smoked herring"

Housekeeping: Closing dinner is being planned today, directions to the boathouse were distributed for today’s activity.  There will be time to take the bus if you would prefer, given the weather.

Our meeting in Raleigh will be September 24, 2011 in the morning- an England Reunion! This was chosen so as not to conflict with NCSU football, thanks to Taylor’s great memorization of the season’s schedule.

Journals: Some have been keeping personal journals throughout the trip.  Ruie suggested we keep a journal as an option for the expressive mode until our September meeting.
-Personal journals tend to have themes (Ruie said her’s is sometimes complaining)

-Visual dreamers may want to keep a dream journal to see life themes emerging

-Journals are path to self-knowledge, or discovering joy within the content of your life, healthy release for feelings/emotions, etc. (Example: Sally Buckner keeps a record of joyful moments)

 -Diaries are a record of the day’s events.  A personal journal is a reflection on anything (guided by a prompt.)
 -Previously written “Letter to Self” is one example of a journal
Ira Progoff uses journaling for self-therapy, a series called The Intensive Journaling
 -One rule is no response, very therapeutic
 -Can begin with meditation
Prompt: complete 2 personal journals:

Think of a recent period in your life- could be a month, five months, 2 years 7 years, a period of time since you married, or got divorced, or had a new job, or were hospitalized, or came into an inheritance.  There is so much to write about that brevity is encouraged.
  • Begin by defining the beginning of the period
  • Use a simile for the period
  • Simply record the memories and facts without judging or censoring yourself
  • “Allow it to pass before you in images and feelings, until you reach the present”. This helps you understand how you came to be here
After a short break, members presented some of their work.
  • Sarah Lee presented a Glogster about the 1st day
  • Mike presented a video on the ghost story video from King’s Head (the group had a laugh at the expense of Kevin’s videography)
  • Jane presented a Prezi on “Salt” air from Portsmouth
  • Sarah Cannon presented a ToonDo on “Not Looking Like an American while in Europe”
(The LCD Projector unexpectedly went off, but it was probably ghosts, the English love their ghosts)
  • Kevin read a written reflection on British courtesies and manners
The group broke for a walk to the Guildford Boathouse-- meeting there at 11:45.

3:20 Class resumes after a boat trip on the River Whey.  We had a lovely cruise along the river with a light lunch.
  • Michelle G. shared poetry based on Sunday chuch services.
  • Kim C. shared her Tabblo, a consideration of whether European women dress better.
  • Keshetta shared a poem about her experiences about her travels
  • Mark recited a poem he wrote inspired about George Eliot’s Middlemarch.  
  • Anna read a poem inspired by Winchester.
  • Rosemary shared a book review connecting material  The Little Bee and Things Fall Apart.
  • Susan played us her doing the laundry video.  
  • Ann B. shared and Animoto about wonderful recent news, and a poem about a future trip to the London Eye.
  • Tanya W.shared a voice recording of a conversation her small group had with John in the George Abbott pub.
  • Leigh Ann shared her prezi based on her reflection on herself as a writer.  
  • Ashley shared a multi-media technology called a ‘vocki’ and her toon doo that had her reflection as writer.  
  • Ann Marie shared her poem about a dinner out.
  • Julie shared sensory poetry about her trip to a lavender farm in an animoto.
After our presentations, Ruie presents a gift to Terese for traveling the furthest to be with us.  Ruie presents Terese with a quill purchased as a low tech gift in Winchester Cathedral.   

4:30 Students took the Writing Apprehension Instrument and were to compare their score  to the score  from our first class.   
4:40 Students filled out evaluation for Study Abroad @ NCSU
4:50 Ruie announces that we need to change our follow up date to Sept. 17th.
5:00 Students completed Wallwisher activity and course evaluation from NCSU.

9:15 Announcements:
Ruie started the day with administrative details: packing the kitchen on Saturday, adding one more gathering/meal to the week (Asked who would be here Thursday, Friday and Saturday), helping to bring equipment back to the States. Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy, but our boat is covered. It may be possible to reschedule for today, but probably not because there is a prepared meal.
 
9:25 Structures for Summary Paragraphs presented by Dr. Ruie Pritchard
Paragraphs don’t always follow the standard format of topic sentence, details, concluding sentence. In small groups, the class practiced different ways to form paragraphs using “Structures for Summary Paragraphs,” including various inductive and deductive paragraphs.

9:55 The Great American One-Sentence Summary – Groups summarized their paragraphs using the formula for the one-sentence summary.

10:10 Small groups shared their paragraphs to show examples of the different paragraph formats. Then, small groups shared their one sentence summaries of their paragraphs. These one sentence summaries can be effective at the end of papers.

10:50 Six Word Stories presented by Donna Morrow
Six words that capture an idea. These are amusing, insightful and summarize an idea or feeling. We practiced writing our own six word stories and then shared our work.

11:10 Copyright Issues presented by Donna Morrow
Images that you have free use to use in your classroom cannot be posted on the internet by you or your students because that is technically republishing the image.

You and your students may use google images for presentations but may not repost on internet (i.e., Glogster).

YouTube has just created a “creative commons” area where images may be used freely by anyone. This idea is becoming more popular. See resource links on Moodle.

Cite images by pasting link under photo or state in a separate area (i.e., “Seagull photo by...”)

We practiced identifying whether different scenarios are fair use or not by taking a class quiz.

11:50 ToonDoo presented by Kevin Oliver. Can create comic strips between characters
Good for book reviews, short stories, summarizing chapters of novels to remember characters, explaining history, duologues.

Another similar program: Bitstrips for schools - can create individual student accounts- 30 day free trial, about $50/year.

1:30 to 6pm Students worked on their ToonDoon project, as well as posting items on their Moodle and Weebly sites
